Driving Evaluation and Vehicle Adaptation Program

Franceen Kaizer, Program Coordinator

Objective
The program provides evaluation services of an individual's physical and mental capacity to drive. Additional services include the recommendation of adapted equipment and the assessment of vehicle accessibility for drivers and passengers.

Approach
Evaluations take place at the hospital and are administered by a specialized occupational therapist. Evaluations on the road are given by an occupational therapist and a recognized driving school instructor in order to provide confirmation to the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) of the individual's functional capability to drive safely. Training of driving with adapted equipment is also offered.

Within the program's vehicle accessibility services, the occupational therapist may evaluate the individual's ability to transfer and load mobility aids into their vehicle. The program also offers information on available financial aid programs.

Clientele
This program provides its services to clients 16 years and over who have never driven and demonstrate an acquired functional congenital problem as well as to drivers with physical disabilities following an accident, illness or impairments related to the aging process.

Vehicle accessibility adaptations are offered to handicapped clients ages 5 and over with proof of their medical diagnosis.

Admissions Criteria Research
The Driving Evaluation program is an active participant in Research initiatives. The Driving Assessment and Retraining Unit uses our state-of-the-art driving simulator and computer equipment to conduct research regarding the evaluation and retraining of driving abilities in individuals with a diagnosis of stroke, head injury or Alzheimer's disease.
