Evaluation, Development and Professional Reintegration Program ("PÉDIP")

PÉDIP provides specialized rehabilitation services aimed at long-lasting integration of the client in the workforce. Active pain management strategies are targeted from the beginning to optimize the development of work capacities that will carry over into the work environment.

Clients
As the only program specializing in vocational rehabilitation on the North Shore of Montreal, PEDIP welcomes workers from Laval and other regions who have musculoskeletal or neurological conditions.

Why and when to refer

• The worker has been unable to return to work for the past 3 months ;
• You observe a therapeutic plateau reached with the actual treatments;
• Return to work is compromised by the concomitant presence of psychological and environmental factors;
• An intervention in the workplace seems necessary in order to support the return to work process.

Interdisciplinary Approach
When first line interventions do not allow the worker to return to vocational activities, a specific approach to address their needs is required. The PÉDIP interdisciplinary team develops clinical activities that focus on empowering the worker, on ensuring its progress as well as its early involvement in work activities.

Programs
In order to meet the needs of workers, services are organized according to the identified requirements. Two programs are available:

Integration Program :

Who: the individual who is no longer making improvements from first line rehabilitation services, but who has a positive prognosis for returning to work.
Why: to take concerted action pertaining to the problems which undermine the worker's progress. The intervention plan is designed to support and empower the worker relative to the actions required for work reintegration.

Activation Program:

Who: the worker whose activity level is greatly limited due to persistent pain.
Why: to promote active pain management and the resumption of activities. As a first step, interventions are designed to stop the cycle that leads to chronicity. Once this is achieved, the worker can continue with the integration phase.

Evaluation Program:

Who: the worker or the student for who a work capacity evaluation is necessary.

Why:  to guide the person in a choice or a reorientation of their career keeping in mind their work capacities.

Team
Since PÉDIP's beginning in 1993, clinicians from different disciplines have developed extensive rehabilitation expertise in vocational rehabilitation. This expertise has been recognized, and has contributed to the formulation of a Provincial frame of reference document. The team includes a clinical coordinator who works in collaboration with the referring resource to ensure that the mandate is respected.

To date, more than 2,000 workers have benefited from the services of this team whose goal is to reintegrate the worker in a safe and efficient manner into his or her workplace.

Our strength lies on our interdisciplinary approach and the support from the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital Research Centre. Our multidisciplinary team is composed of over 20 health care providers including :

• Dietitian
• Kinesiologist
• Occupational Therapist
• Physical Educator
• Physical Rehabilitation Therapist
• Physician
• Physiotherapist
• Psychologist
• Rehabilitation Monitor
• Rehabilitation Nurse
• Vocational Counselor

Facilities
In order to develop their work capacities, the workers have access to :

• 3 general training workshops (sedentary, light, medium) and 6 realistic work stations (gardening, storekeeper, disassembly of wheelchairs, manufacture of paper...)
When the worker does not have the required endurance to reintegrate his/her real working environment or when the work environment does not allow for progressive reintegration, these workshops and work stations allow each worker to develop capacities, according to their specific needs identified at the evaluation. To this end, we have several standardized work capacity evaluations.

• An exercise room that includes 19 cardio machines
This room is equipped with the same machines found in a community gym. The worker can have access to a variety of equipment which will respond to his needs while being in a motivating climate.

• A warm, therapeutic pool to assist in pain management and aqua-fitness
The warm water pool enables pain management in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. The support offered by the water allows the client to do a variety of exercises impossible to perform outside of the pool.

• A room with mirrors able to accommodate groups for teaching and posture correction during movement
This room allows for postural improvement and to observe the client charges handling techniques during his activities.

Admissibility criteria

• 16 years old and older
• Laval resident *
• Physically impaired
• Potential and willingness to go back to work
*People with services paid by third party living outside Laval can be admitted to the Program.

Teaching and continuing education
In order to ensure an uniform approach to the workers, the different professionals participate in teaching activities, in addition to their discipline training activities. Considering their knowledge in work reintegration, the PEDIP clinicians are sollicitated annually to give university classes. The PÉDIP welcomes students from diverse disciplines for internship and stages.
